The most worshiped of the lusitanian Goddesses, Ataegina is Lady of the Underworld and Spring. The remnants of her cult are found mostly in spanish territory - Badajoz, Caceres and Toledo - the only found in Portugal being in Elvas. A good part of her artifacts are shared with the Roman Goddess Proserpina, suggesting some similarity among these Goddesses, which reveals to us how Ataegina was worshiped. The name Ataegina means "reborn", which proposes a myth in which She dies and returns to life in another shape - a very common mythological formula to explain the seasons. We can look at this Goddess as a spring maiden that dies, becoming queen of the underworld - with celebration of her descent and ascent similar to Proserpina and Persephone. Altough, in the surface, this Goddess can seem just like a "Lusitanian Persephone", there is much hidden in her facet as Queen of the Underworld. It is in fact curious the this is the facet we may find in a pre-roman cult, with the spring function appearing with assimilation to Proserpina. Her main function is as Queen of the Underworld, spring and fertility being something secondary. Not just Queen, Punisher - one of the ways of worshiping this Goddess could involve curse tablets, which implies this Goddess is the one to punish the souls that lead a less solidary life. The main cult to Ataegina was bronze goats, placed on her altar, also being her main symbol.
Her epithets justify this powerful and mysterious facet of Queen, that we also associate to the Moon for her mysterious and magical character as chtonic royalty. We have some general ones, like Dea Sancta, that calls her a Sacred Goddess, or even Domina, to respect her as Queen. We have a place, that would be the main place of ancient cult, Turobrigensi, from Turibriga. Even more, one that reminds us of her similarities to Proserpina, of the same name, which reveals how these Goddesses share facets. Finally, some attribute specific characteristics, like Servatrix, guardian and protector, or Invicta, the invicible.
We celebrate this Goddess with the passing of the seasons.
In the Iseum of the Liminal Moon, we worship Ataegina as Queen of the Liminal and Moon Goddess.
Blessing of Ataegina Invicta!
